heart attack!

For the past two days,
I've been having the Co-op placement application form
open on Mozilla
because the form cannot be saved throughout the process
and I cannot bring myself to finish it in one sitting.

so as I do it bit by bit...
eventually, there's a substantial amount of info in there.
next thing you know,
I open too many tabs... and Firefox crashes O.o

NOOOOOOOO!

but then they manage to restore it,
and whaddayaknow,
all the info I typed in was still there!
YES! :)

and then, being the procrastinator that I am,
I put it aside to work on other projects
-namely the Solid Rock RFTS poster
I opened Photoshop and my computer lags...
and Firefox refuses to respond.
Crash. Error message. NOOOOOO!

LUCKILY,
they managed to restore it again,
and all the info was still there, phew! :)

and then this morning,
I happily dragged the vacuum cleaner into my room
plugged it in, and turned on the switch...
*TAK-ewwwww*
everything in my room that was electrically plugged to a socket went off
INCLUDING MY LAPTOP.

aaaaaaargh! NOOOOOO!

damned vacuum cleaner,
this is not the first time it tripped all the sockets! >:(

quickly turn it back on
restore windows,
cross my fingers and open Mozilla....
"Restore session?"
yesyesyesyes.....
ALL THE INFORMATION WAS STILL THERE
YESSSSS!

Co-op either designed their website
in collaboration with Mozilla
to make it super idiot-proof for people like me
or I am one helluva lucky girl :)))

I better finish the application soon la,
cannot tahan this kind of anxiety anymore.

Procrastination should be made the 8th deadly sin, I tell you.

The Big Knit 2009 :)

there's actually this charity project going on
it's sponsored by Innocent Drinks and Sainsbury's
in support of Age Concern and Help The Aged

and basically, what the Big Knit is all about,
is that people knit little hats for the smoothie bottles,
and send them off to Innocent Drinks.

and come 4th Nov 2009,
all the behatted Innocent smoothie bottles will be in stores

and for every behatted smoothie bottle sold,
Sainsbury's will donate 35p to the concerned charities.

cute idea?
I think it's adorable :)

so I decided to contribute as well
and because I've only just picked up knitting
I didn't dare venture much more than just the beginner's pattern

and so these are my little smoothie hats :)

they're not much,
but I'm still quite proud nonetheless :)

at least I tried :)

The Shakespearean Experiment

"To contract, or not to contract: that is the question."
Today we had contractile response lab,
where we had a tiny piece of pig bladder tissue
and we were supposed to make it contract
using this drug Carbachol in increasing concentrations.

Before we started the actual experiment, however,
we had to test that the tissue actually could give a response
(no point pushing drugs into it only to find it doesnt respond, right?)
So we tested the tissue by stimulating it with potassium chloride, KCl,
which, should actually induce a contraction.

Round 1 of KCl... no response
Round 2 of KCl... no response (sigh)
Round 3 of KCl... still no contraction. -.----

sai hei.

Asked for a new sample of tissue
("we think this one is dead", lol)
By the time they hooked us up with a new piece of meat,
one and a half hours was gone :(

and we still had to wait 20 minutes
for the new piece to settle down and get comfortable.
sigh.

finally, after 15 minutes,
and the recordings look fairly stable
and we were about to launch a new round of KCl,
the tissue started contracting by itself... spontaneously.
and it refused to stop.

first, one that refused to contract,
next, one that refused to stop?
swtzzzz.

i looked at the little piece of meat dangling there,
mentally screaming at it -"what, you nervous issit?!"
and apparently it heard me,
because then it spontaneously stopped -.-

so then we could finally *finally* get on with the experiment

and we were like almost the last to finish.

takpe la, as long as can get results :)

The Great Lasagne Project

Sometime last week,
Josh mentioned that he wanted to make lasagne
and suggested we do it together
I was like "okay!"
until he said "I want to make a week's worth"

Whoa! That's a lot of lasagne!
If not nice howwwww :(
paiseh.

So I told him I'd like to try out the recipe first
coz after all, I've never done anything like this before.

Then today, (luckily) he reminded me of the GLP
and coincidentally I was going grocery shopping,
so I decided to pick up all the ingredients
and launch the project tonight itself!

So there I went,
Googling the main recipe and tweaking from there
Making everything from scratch

I asked the judge himself to come try
and comment so I can make amends to the recipe
before we embark on mass production making a week's worth

okay, it's yummier than it looks here -.-
snapshot camera + fluorescent lighting
doesnt produce very yummylicious-looking food.

and of course since we had such a big dish of it
I invited the one with the big stomach Abel to come share :)

Gone la everything.

Even the little cheese bits on the side have no escape, haha :D

Success!

A lovely surprise :)

"Hello, is this Kimberly?"
"Yes?"
"I'm calling from the Reception of Broadgate Park. May I know if you're currently still a resident here?"
"Yes I am"
"Great. Could I confirm your surname please?"
"Mak, M-A-K."
"Ok. We have a bouquet of flowers here for you, if you could come and pick them up."

Flowers? (O.o)
who on earth would send me flowers?

So I went down to the Reception
and the moment I saw what sort of flowers they were,
my heart skipped a beat
Only one person knew I loved these flowers.

For no particular occasion,
and across continents,

Hmmmm....

I have the sweetest boyfriend in the world :)

i friggin suck at powerpoint -.----

i dont like designing posters.
i dont like powerpoint.
i dont like designing posters in powerpoint.

the same poster would have been done 3 hours ago,
if i had the freedom to use photoshop
and, it would have looked much better too.
now, its so wordy and powerpointy-looking.

how do people use powerpoint to make posters anyway?!
there are no layers,
and you can only "send to back" or "bring to front"
and after doing it multiple times, you forget which is in front of which :S

plus, when you click on the wrong thing,
like accidentally on a text box instead of an image,
you end up moving everything
and screwing with all the alignments
making everything go haywire.

and you cant easily change the opacity
so that the text is more easily visible
and you cant superimpose stuff on top of other stuff
and you cant brush off parts you dont like
and shift things around as much as you like....

bleargh.
i hate making posters in powerpoint.

all that fuss for one damn credit.

Transformations

went to the George Green Library to have a quick lab discussion...

took a stroll on the way back...

the University is so haunting on a Sunday...

So quiet and tranquil...

Such a big difference from the usual hustle and bustle...

and the weather, quickly turned from bright and sunny...
to cloudy and forbidding...

you can even still see some rays of sunshine peeking among the clouds...

the seasons are also changing...
you can see the signs of autumn...

as I crunch along atop the leaves...
I can't help but wonder to myself...

will I be like the weather,
will I be like the seasons,
will I soon change too?

Sigh.

when I was in lab that day
and everything was just not going right for me
things were tumbling everywhere
and everything was not going as expected
I honestly thought that I was not making a very good impression

I thought I was making a fool of myself
and because of me,
the lecturers and the other UK students
would make a generalised judgement that
Malaysian students are all retards
and cannot do anything right in the lab.
Seriously, that was what was going through my mind.

Little did I know,
everyone was struggling too
everyone made mistakes
and everyone was fumbling as well.
I was just too busy to notice.

After looking at the compiled data sheets
I found that
The UK students, even after knowing they made a mistake
made no effort to correct their mistake at that point of time (even if they could)
and merely stated in their report that they did something wrongly
resulting in all the data going haywire.
and they have no idea how to present their work clearly.

now some of the experiments are done in duplicates
and both experimental setups show vastly different results
even though everything was done exactly the same way

how to write report liddat?!

sigh. this is crazy.

i miss being around kids.
sigh.
being a grownup's no fun :(
